Photo-spectrometer based on heterogeneous integration

Current photo-spectrometers based on bulk optical components, MEMS or monolithically integrated waveguide devices are not satisfactory because of their size, limited reliability or high price. The approach we present is the heterogeneous integration of thin film InGaAs photodetectors on SOI wavelength selective devices using wafer scale processing technologies. This can lead to small, efficient, accurate, sensitive, reliable and inexpensive photo-spectrometers.

Different SOI wavelength selective devices are envisioned but planar concave gratings (PCG's) offer several advantages. These components offer a high integration density, especially for devices with a high number of output channels. The device shown in the picture has four 20nm spaced output channels, crosstalk better than -30dB and an on-chip loss of 7.5dB. This relative high loss value is due to the fact that no precautions were taken to reduce the reflection loss at the grating facets

Detection of light in the near-infrared region of the spectrum is not possible in Silicon, which is naturally transparent in this region. Therefore, we focus on the integration of thin film InGaAs detectors onto SOI waveguides.
