Flexible Study Paths for Working Students
To address the needs of working students, flexible study paths are designed to accommodate this;
whereby the thesis can be done entirely at a UGent Research Lab, at a (/their current) company or R&D center, or in a hybrid mode.
At UGent: 1 ECTS ≈ 25-30 hours (incl. lectures, lab work, project work, assignments, examinations), there are 12-13 lecturing weeks / semester + 4 weeks examination period.
Below, one can find example (or mock) paths for different study durations. Depending on the background of the students, the order of certain courses can be altered. We also support whereby stduents takes a larger study load in one year as compared to (the) other year(s).
This amounts to ≈ 30 ECTS /year or ≈ 15 ECTS /semester.In number of hours, this implies spending ≈ 375-450 hours /semester or between 22-26 hours /week to the program.
This amounts to ≈ 20 ECTS /year or ≈ 10 ECTS /semester. In number of hours, this implies spending ≈ 250-300 hours /semester or between 15-18 hours /week to the program.
This amounts to ≈ 15 ECTS /year or ≈ 8 ECTS /semester. In number of hours, this implies spending ≈ 190-225 hours /semester or between 11-13 hours /week to the program.
Note: take into account that spreading the program over multiple years will impact the total tuition fee.

Do you want to combine your job with training as an employee? You may be entitled to Flemish training leave (VOV) 🔗. With the VOV, an employee in the private sector has the right to be absent from work to follow a training course, and to do so with retention of pay (possibly limited to a certain maximum).
Micro-credential
While flexible study paths allow students to spread the program over multiple years, this option may not suit everyone due to time constraints or work-life balance considerations. To offer a more accessible alternative, we launched a Micro-credential: Photonic Integrated Circuits – from theory to practice and applications.
