Compact spot-size converters

Main Researcher: Bert Luyssaert

This research topic is about the coupling between planar waveguides having the same vertical layer structure and confinement but different horizontal widths.
This kind of coupling can occur in various situations like when vertical fiber couplers are used to couple light into a photonic integrated circuit or when multimodal straight waveguide sections are applied as low-loss connections.
Traditionally adiabatic tapers slowly convert the size of the light spot between different waveguides but tend to be very long (hundreds of microns). Instead of avoiding exciting higher-order modes, as is the basic principle of adiabatic tapers, these modes can be used in a positive way and allow new coupler concepts based on interference between the various waveguide modes.
The study of new coupler concepts has been the subject of my PhD research (thesis can be downloaded below) and has resulted in designs with relatively high coupling efficiency in the length region where adiabatic tapers no longer function well.
Experimental verification of some designs is provided as well.
