Ir. Joris Roels receives Barco High Tech Award for Scientific Research

Ir. Joris Roels, PhD student at the Photonics Research Group, INTEC, Ghent University, was awarded the Barco High Tech Award for Scientific Research on 'Actuation of Integrated Components through the Optical Gradient Force' on Friday October 15 2010. Besides the award, he also received the corresponding prize money of 5.000 Euro.

The awards are given by Barco nv in collaboration with the Vlaamse Ingenieurskamer (VIK), vzw Bachelor.be and the Fund for Scientific Research (FWO) in order to boost scientific and technological research. The awards also emphasize the importance of the Flemish reseach oriented economy, innovation and close cooperation between educational institutions, research institutes and industry.
Barco High Tech Awards is the new - more international - name for the 'prizes for Scientific Research' which Barco grants since 1987. The awards were created in collaboration with the FWO to stimulate and support research and innovation in Flanders.

The presentation of the High Tech Awards took place during a special ceremony at Kinepolis Ghent, and the winners, educational institutions and other guests were invited to a movie which was shown as part of the Flanders International Film Festival Ghent, which can be considered to be one of the most prominent film events in Europe and sponsored by Barco.
